I have been fortunate during my over 2 decades of performing professionally to have had the opportunity to play for many distinguished names. In addition to a number of Hollywood celebrities, I have also performed privately for former British Prime Minister Mr. Tony Blair and recently for a reception held for Prince Andrew, Duke of York . I’ve learnt in time that life really is about the journey not the destination.
This is where my journey began.
I was born in Canada but raised here on the beautiful island of Barbados. I can’t remember a time in my life that I didn’t love music. It seems to me that it has always played an integral part in my life.
At the age of 12 I remember being drawn to my father’s old steel string guitar that for years had been left idle in the corner of his room. I had to learn how to play it. There was no question. I had to be able to recreate the sounds that I was hearing on the radio and on my treasured cassettes and vinyl record collection.
With no guitar teachers available in Barbados during the 1980's I was forced to begin teaching myself how to play guitar from instruction books and by listening and copying the sounds of classic rock and popular folk tunes. My initial determination to conquer the instrument soon blossomed into an undying love, dedication and devotion for the musical art form.
After a few years performing with various local rock bands and performing regularly within the local bar and hotel circuit, I decided I needed to take my playing abilities to the next level. My Uncle in Germany had recently given me a varied collection of Spanish guitar pieces. It was the most beautiful music I had ever heard played on guitar. Once again, I had to learn how to play it.
So arming myself with heavily rehearsed classical guitar audition pieces, I sold the majority of my belongings and travelled back to Canada. I was successful in being accepted into Bishop's University's and later transferred to McGill University's prestigious Classical Guitar Performance Program. The experience and training was life altering and opened me up to a whole new world of music and performance capabilities.
Life has now brought me full circle. I have returned to my country Barbados, am now happily married, raising two gorgeous children and doing what I love - performing beautiful guitar music.
